Classic Christian rock group Petra is currently on its “Best for Last” 50th Anniversary Tour... which they’ve been doing for the last three years!
Petra was created in 1972 by songwriter and guitarist Bob Hartman. But it wasn’t until 1979 that Petra really took off. That was when vocalist Greg X. Volz (the “X” stands for Xavier) joined the band and they released “Washes Whiter Than”, featuring a distinctive album cover in the shape of a box of laundry detergent. (Volz actually turned down an offer to become the lead singer of the secular band REO Speedwagon.)
Petra’s popularity really took off with their next album “Never Say Die” (1981) featuring their breakthrough hit “The Coloring Song.”
However, Petra’s rock sound was controversial in many conservative churches. Many fans were shocked to attend a Petra concert, expecting the acoustic harmonies of The Coloring Song, only to discover high energy rock songs like "Never Say Die" and “Angel of Light” (a phenomenon I discovered firsthand when I saw Petra in Denver in 1981).
In 1982, they released another iconic album “More Power To Ya” which began a string of 13 straight bestselling albums.
In 1985, Greg Volz left the band to pursue a solo career, so Bob Hartman invited vocalist John Schlitt to join the band. Schlitt had been lead singer for the secular band Head East until drug addiction cost him his job. Afterwards, Schlitt’s wife became a born-again Christian and convinced her reluctant husband to talk to her pastor. That’s when Schlitt also gave his life to Christ.
With Schlitt as their lead singer, Petra saw the peak of its popularity from 1986-1994. When Bob Hartman left the group, they had their last big-selling album in 1997 with “Petra Praise 2: We Need Jesus.”
Bob Hartman returned briefly in 2003, and the band officially retired in 2005. In 2022, Hartman and Schlitt began the 50th anniversary tour, which has continued for three years. Alas, if you wanted to see them in Colorado, they were in Ft. Collins in May, but there are no other Colorado dates scheduled. Here is an interview from the Michigan concert on August 4.
