Chris Renzema’s song “Just As Good” is, to my knowledge, the only modern song that contains the word “Ebenezer”!
In the song, he declares that God is “just as good as when I met You”:
You're still the same God that led me through the fire
You're still the same God who separates the waters
Come do what only You can do
Then he adds these words:
And I will build an altar
And stack it stone by stone
'Cause
every Ebenezer says I've never been alone
My faith will surely falter
But that don't change what You've done
'Cause
every Ebenezer points to where my help comes from
The best known reference to Ebenezer is in the hymn “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing”:
Here I raise my Ebenezer
Here by Thy great help I've come
And I hope by Thy good pleasure
Safely to arrive at home
What does Ebenezer mean? Literally, “stone of help.”
After God caused the Israelites to rout the Philistines, Samuel set a stone at that place and named it Ebenezer, saying “Thus far the Lord has helped us.” The stone was a reminder to Israel of what the Lord had done for them. (1 Samuel 7)
For Chris Renzema, when he sees those reminders, “every Ebenezer says I’ve never been alone.” Even though we are “prone to wander”!
