Have you ever read a Scripture – one you think you know well and have read many times – only to be amazed at what jumped out at you from the page? Well, it happened to me recently during my morning reading.
I’ve always loved the Psalms. They touch every aspect of life…joy, peace, trials, fear, deep truth, comfort…you get the idea. As I was reading Psalm 33 (which I have read many times) I was struck with verses 10 and 11:
“The LORD foils the plans of the nations; He thwarts the purposes of the peoples. But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of His heart through all generations.” (NIV)
If you have been dismayed by the social, cultural and political trends in our country, these verses speak volumes about our sovereign God. I will admit to being dismayed along with you. As our nation drifts – or rushes headlong – into national sin and corruption, it is very hard for me as a father and grandfather to not worry for the future of my grown children and grandchildren. But Psalm 33 couldn’t be clearer – God’s plans stand firm forever and the purposes of His heart can be trusted through all generations.
You may not be thrilled with what we see rapidly unfolding in our country. I’m certainly not either! If we are looking to secular leaders, it can indeed seem hopeless at times. But, Psalm 33 has more for us…hope that endures. It’s found in verses 20 and 21:
“We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield. In Him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in His holy name.” (NIV)
There it is! Our hope – our only hope – is in the LORD. He IS coming again and He will set all things right! If you are like me, you get impatient. He can’t come soon enough. But, and it’s an important “but”, His plans and purposes – and His timing – are perfect. So, we wait, in hope, trusting in His holy name.
Hebrews 10:37-38 says: “He who is coming will come and will not delay. But my righteous one will by faith.” (NIV)
So, as we (anxiously) wait on His appearing, we can also join the Psalmist:
“I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in His Word I put my hope.” (Psalm 130:5, NIV)
