This being the month of Valentine’s Day
It is the season to be talking about love. I think it is safe to say that our culture will easily overlook the greatest and most powerful form of love in existence…God’s love. Romans 8:38-39 goes through a serious list of powerful things that cannot keep us from the love of God. His love is deep…immeasurable, incomprehensible, unconditional, eternal, and unfailing.
When I consider the great depth of God’s love for us, having grown up in Christian radio, my mind automatically goes to that wonderful program from days gone, Gateway To Joy. If you have been listening to KJOL for a while, you likely remember that wonderful opening line that Elizabeth Elliot used as a program slogan. “You are loved with an everlasting love, and underneath are the everlasting arms.”
That is a quote from Scripture actually, Deuteronomy 33 and also Jeremiah 31:3, “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.” There seems to be almost a correlation between the love of God and the kindness of God. Perhaps kindness is practical…love in action. Both are used to lead us to Him.
That love of God is powerful; and I confess more powerful than what I have to offer. It is easier for me to tout the justice and power of God at times, rather than His love. However, we see the gentle heart of a loving Father in Romans 2…God’s kindness leads us to repentance.
And as I think back into those serious times in my life when I wasn’t following after Him, I remember “getting it” through his loving-kindness and mercy.
If you’re like me, you need a focal point to keep you in step. God’s ultimate love and kindness was displayed for us on the cross…that immovable point in human history that declares His deep love for us…love deeper than death. Join me this month and ask how you might follow in His steps, as we model his sacrificial, merciful, and unconditional loving-kindness. Happy Valentine’s Day!
