KJOL has introduced a number of new artists for the new year. Here’s the first installment.

AYANDA KJUMALO & TARA CRUZ

Joyful, Joyful (You’re the One)

Ayanda Kjumalo (“koo-MALL-uh”) is from Zimbabwe. He attended Moody Bible Institute and was a worship leader at Moody Church. He is now a worship pastor in Michigan, and leads worship workshops around the country. He describes his music as “a unique Afrocentric vibe fused in with various genres, who can shift from hymns to contemporary songs while also being multicultural.”

Tara Cruz was a founding member of Vertical Worship at Harvest Bible Chapel. Today she travels around the country leading worship and worship workshops.

You may recognize Ayanda from his high-energy calypso-styled song (see link above).

CHRIS RENZEMA

Just As Good

Chris Renzema grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan. After a mission trip to Guatemala, he moved to Nashville where his songs soon drew a following. His music is described as “acoustic at heart, shifting seamlessly from indie rock to folk worship to Americana; gritty but accessible, profound but infinitely listenable with a voice that yearns like a desert island man singing for a cup of water.”

Renzema signed with Centricity Records (home of Lauren Daigle) and in 2020 he was nominated for New Artist of the Year at the Dove Awards. (The winner was We The Kingdom.)

INNARAY ROCHA

Sanctify

Innaray Rocha is a native of Brazil. She graduated from Berklee College of Music, and is a worship leader in Massachusetts. She also works as a social media marketing manager.

JEREMY ROSADO

Come and See

Jeremy Rosado grew up in a large Puerto Rican family in Queens, NY. When his family moved to Florida, he became a worship leader at church. When he was 21, he got the chance to open for Andrea Bocelli in Germany, and was just about to enter the music world when his family needed him to become the guardian for his 11 year old niece. After she turned 18, he returned to music. In 2012, he was an American Idol finalist, and in 2021, he appeared on The Voice. The next year he signed with Capitol Christian Music.

On April 18, heaven’s gain was our loss when Mandisa died unexpectedly at her home in Nashville. She was 47. The cause of death has not yet been determined, but at her funeral, Mandisa’s father, John Hundley, shared his thoughts : “Here's what I think happened. Mandisa fell down in her bedroom. They found her on the floor. If you look from the rear of her bed, she was laying on the left side. It’s clear that's where she was laying, there was a couple of big rugs there and some clothes. “On the right side of the bed, front, was this nightstand. I found her phone on the right side of the bed. There was no way for Mandisa to get around the bed, go out there and get a phone to call for help. “She did not harm herself,” he asserted. “As she said, Mandisa loved the Lord and the Lord loved Mandisa ." Mandisa’s music career began in 2006 when she was a finalist on American Idol. In 2007 she released her first album True Beauty which debuted at No. 1 on the Christian charts. Some of her well-known songs include “God Speaking,” “Voice of a Savior,” “Freedom Song” and “Out of the Dark”. In 2020 she released “Way Maker”, a powerful version of the COVID era hit. And the same year, she released her final hit, “ You Keep Hope Alive ”, a duet with Jon Reddick. From the beginning to end, Your word never fails You keep hope alive, Because You are alive Jesus You are alive Death had a stronghold, But Your life was stronger When evil is rising, You’re rising higher With power to save, With power to save You keep hope alive, You keep hope alive

He had noticed we had been off the air on 94.5 FM in Delta…and I related to him it was one of “those” weekends for our poor equipment. Not only did our AM 1400 Delta transmitter go down causing us to make a very expensive replacement only weeks before, but our FM transmitter in Delta went down at the same time as our Montrose 91.9FM transmitter, and only hours after our whole network went down across the Western Slope!

The other day a kindly woman knocked on my door asking for a donation to help build the local swimming pool. I came back with a glass of water. Doesn’t it feel great to give to a good cause??
