“It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every
word that comes from the mouth of God.’” -Matthew 4:4
The older I get, the more I realize my extreme need for the Word of God. Countless times in my life, I have underestimated the Bible. Having gone recently through a long ongoing “season of suffering,” I have discovered that reading God’s Word is not just important, but mission critical. During the times of pain and fear, there is a huge difference in my day, continence, and physical health whether or not I take the time to search and reflect on the Scriptures. I have both neglected it, and have also let it consume me… the difference is night and day…and God’s Word wins out every time.
I have discovered yesterday’s time in God’s Word was for yesterday…He has a Word for us every new day, a Word that can and does make all the difference. So we need to be seeking Him daily and hourly. Some of the benefits to continually being in God’s Word, includes encouragement for the mind, assurance of His power and presence, reminders to stay the course, assurance of salvation, and the quickening of His Spirit that comes with abiding in Him. The Spirit then works peace, joy, and patience into our day; yes, so often through His Word.
In times of suffering, wisdom is usually the last thing we are concerned with (we want relief, right?). But we actually need wisdom in great measure. The Lord and His Word is the only place to find it. Job 28 says “Wisdom is not to be found among mortals…God alone knows the way.” The Scripture also tells us, if we seek wisdom, we will find it.
So where do I go when I personally need a Word from the Lord? This year, I have poured over the Psalms. Psalm 27, Psalm 91, Psalm 34, Psalm 118, Psalm 121…the list goes on, but read ALL of the Psalms. When I read them, I reflect on each verse, use them in personal prayer, and personalize them to myself and my situation. And don’t forget…the whole Scripture is powerful and useful.
“The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul;” Psalm 19:7
One of the neat things about what we do here at KJOL, is we teach the Word. In those times we can’t be pouring over the Bible, we often can listen to someone doing that for us. I have also found that a song will also deliver a personal Word from the Lord. Would I recommend using KJOL in the midst of your suffering…you know I would! And don’t forget to pass the tip along to others, even outside of the listening area (we have listening options for them too). If you have a friend going through a time of suffering, let them know about KJOL, but especially about the importance of continually reading and reflecting on God’s Word. And when suffering comes knocking on your door-step, you know what to do.
