The other day I was wading through the toy aisle with my kids at the Rim Rock Walmart in Grand Junction, and was surprised to see no small number of really creepy dolls staring at me from the shelf. For a second I thought I was in the middle of a 90s B-Movie. I guess the goth crowd from my day grew up and reproduced in large enough number that there is a demand for creepy dolls beyond Halloween season. I chuckled to myself the make-up industry must hope to make a killing. I quickly ushered my small ones out of that aisle.
It used to be that we just had to worry about girls dolls giving them a Barbie complex or a false sense of what women are supposed to look like. Fast forward a few years and Shadow High dolls are teaching our youngsters how to embrace dark fetish. Kids entertainment is also trending in that direction. And mommy and daddy’s entertainment choices, clothing, tattoos, and bumper stickers are worse.
Do we live in a culture of death?
Last month was Sanctity of Human Life Month…and oftentimes in the pro-life circles, we toss that term around…culture of death. The philosopher Nietzsche touted God must be dead because Christians ceased to be influential in the world he lived in. Are we impacting culture in our day?
“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” –Ephesians 6:12
While we know the darkness is around us at unprecedented levels in our lifetime…even here on the Western slope…we are still on the winning side of the battle and darkness and death will not prevail against our King. A recent Barna study found that 44% of American adults describe themselves as “more open to God today than before the pandemic.” About three quarters say they have a desire to grow more spiritually. So instead of admitting defeat and hiding in the shadows, God’s people have an opportunity to make the most of the times we are living in and reengage with our culture. The enemy never stopped. While no doubt we have been distracted at times, we need not worry…God is bigger and He is stronger.
"For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.” -2 Corinthians 10:3-4
God has given us all unique gifts to use creatively and powerfully for His glory. The world doesn’t have that. Let’s together shine the light and love of Christ into our dark world, proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus and the Word of truth. Together we can grow, serve, and bless the Kingdom of God and make the world around us a brighter place as well. He is with us.
