31 year old Colton Dixon is known for his prominent mop of blonde hair and his appearance as a finalist on American Idol ten years ago. But these days he is gaining attention for his new song “Build A Boat.” The title is a bit odd, true, until you listen closer to the lyrics.
I will build a boat in the sand
Where they say it never rains
I will stand up in faith
I’ll do anything it takes
With Your wind in my sails
Your love never fails or fades
I’ll build a boat in the desert place
Dixon’s Noah-inspired "Build A Boat" has been the No. 1 song on the Christian adult Contemporary charts for four weeks now, and on Friday, Dixon will perform the song during his debut at the Grand Old Opry in Nashville.
Dixon says he was shaken when he was dropped by his record label in 2017. “I had a lot of soul searching to do. I knew my security and my identity was too wrapped up in it.” Then his wife Annie suggested the change might be God’s way of setting him up for a new direction.
He signed a new record deal and recorded “Miracles” in 2020 about the little miracles in life we often take for granted. Then months later, his wife gave birth to twin girls, one of them without a pulse. As he and Annie prayed, the doctors worked—successfully—to resuscitate their daughter, who is now a healthy 2-year-old (you can see a picture of the adorable twins in this story). Dixon says being a father has taught him more about the kind of love God has for his children.
Dixon’s music video for “Build a Boat” is dedicated to Mercy Ships and features twin boys whose deformed legs were corrected by Mercy Ships surgeons.
