Meet Maverick City Music and Acoustic Truth. These two groups have very different back stories, and both are fascinating!
Maverick City Music
Maverick City Music defines a maverick as someone who is “unorthodox, free spirit, rule breaker, one that breaks away from the herd.” MCM is actually a collective of musicians based in Atlanta. They are mavericks because they write and record music that brings together CCM (Contemporary Christian Music) and Gospel music, two musical styles that “otherwise exist in their own separate worlds.”
Last year, MCM collaborated with Elevation Worship, and the album “Old Church Basement” quickly rose to the top of both the CCM and Gospel charts. Maverick founders Tony Brown and Jonathan Jay brought the group together after doing a series of 17 songwriting camps where they got to meet over 100 artists and songwriters, resulting in hundreds of songs.
Acoustic Truth
Back in 2010, Ryan Knott was a talented baseball pitcher at Duke University. But his baseball hopes were dashed after elbow injuries, and he began doubting God’s plan for his life.
Unable to play ball, he accepted an internship at Camp Star, a camp for kids with special needs near Chicago. That’s where he met Sarah.
Sarah could relate to Ryan’s struggles: she had scholarships to play basketball at several colleges but turned them down to attend Lake Forest College near Chicago…and then she didn’t make the team. But instead of bitterness, Sarah began a Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Lake Forest and got a job as an athletic trainer.
Ryan and Sarah were also musicians, and after the summer camp, they kept in touch and exchanged music. Ryan proposed in 2014, but before they “tied the Knott” (sorry!), Sarah wanted them to attend a Family Life Weekend to Remember. It started with a bang—literally. Their car was struck by lightning on the way to the conference! Sparks were also flying between them, and not the good kind! You can read the rest of that story here.
They did get married, and formed their own group, Acoustic Truth. Their current song “Circle My Dreams” talks about wrapping their dreams and plans in prayer “because nothing can compare to the promises You keep when I’m on my knees.”
